LAURENCE DURRELL
Lawrence Durrell’s mythical play “the Alexandria Quartet - Clea” is presented in Kavala’s Imaret, the othoman building where Mohemet Ali Pasha was born, at Kavala and Filippi Festival on 30 and 31 of August.
In Durrell’ s “Alexandria Quartet” politics, history, mythology and philosophy affect the lifes and the thoughts of the heroes. Antzela Brouskou mentions : “Sometimes you meet Freud and suddenly Buddha takes his place”.
Durrell used the theory of relativity as a model for the structure of the book and named it “a poem about relativity”. Antzela Brouskou adds: “ the story itself is seen through different points of view and as a result we chose fragments from all the four books, mostly from Clea, the fourth one. Getting lost in the labyrinths of the plot was something we were not interested in. We focused on the heroes’ inner life and the wounds of time”...
The three performers act as narrators, as voices that emerge from memory in order to revive the heroes’ tortured past.
The performance wishes to be free from all boundaries concerning the form, in order to “let the book dream”, as Durrell himself mentions in the Quartet.
